Zarqa has allocated land as a shelter for rehabilitating stray dogs.

Governor Hassan Al-Jabour has announced the launch of the second phase to eradicate the issue of stray dogs in Zarqa governorate. During a meeting attended by Deputy Dr. Hayel Ayyash, the Mayor of Zarqa, Engineer Imad Al-Momani, the Mayor of Ruseifa, Shadi Al-Zaynati, and several directors of governmental executive bodies in the governorate, Al-Jabour highlighted the significant achievements of the first phase of the plan, including reducing incidents to zero in some areas and by 50% in others.

Al-Jabour explained that the first step involved relocating stray dogs from residential areas to designated areas outside the city. Food was provided to them using leftover scraps from restaurants and food factories, which were collected in those designated areas. He emphasized that this process created a suitable environment for the dogs to remain outside residential areas.

The second phase of the plan includes allocating a 20-dunam piece of land to gather and rehabilitate the dogs, as well as vaccinate them. The long-term goal is to utilize these dogs for social purposes, such as guarding facilities, in a more effective manner.

Al-Jabour highlighted that Zarqa is considered an exemplary model in tackling the issue of stray dogs.

Ahmed Hussein Al-Tamimi, the President of the Care Society for Animal and Environmental Welfare, stated that the first phase involved distributing over 300,000 kilograms of remaining food from restaurants and food factories. He mentioned that the society has implemented a plan to retrieve the dogs by feeding them at a rate of 50 meters per day. The society’s plan covered all areas of Zarqa.

Al-Tamimi confirmed that the estimated maximum number of stray dogs in Zarqa is around 700 and stated that the society has built a database to determine appropriate approaches for dealing with these animals.
