France’s Veolia launches $95 million plastic recycling project in Britain

London, July 9, 2025 — French environmental services company Veolia has announced a £70 million ($95 million) investment to build what will become Britain’s largest closed-loop plastic recycling facility.

Construction is already underway, with the plant expected to be operational by early 2026. The new facility is part of Veolia’s wider investment plan for the UK recycling sector, projected to reach around £1 billion by 2030.

Closed-loop technology will enable the plant to recycle PET trays into food-grade materials, strengthening supply chains for the British grocery industry and advancing the UK’s circular economy.

“There is significant potential to grow the plastic recycling market, with 2.2 million tons of plastics available to be recycled each year in the UK,” said Gavin Graveson, CEO of Veolia UK.

Graveson also called for stronger government support to boost the sector’s momentum, urging a “timely and meaningful escalation” of the current Plastic Packaging Tax to incentivize recycling at scale.
