NASA-ISRO to launch advanced NISAR satellite on July 30 for global climate and Earth monitoring: Key timings, how to watch live and other important information
NASA and ISRO are set to launch the advanced NISAR satellite today, July 30, 2025, at 5:40 PM IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India. The satellite will be carried aboard India’s GSLV-F16 rocket and marks a major milestone in Earth observation and climate monitoring. NISAR, developed jointly by NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is the first satellite to use dual-frequency synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to scan the entire Earth every 12 days. It will monitor changes in Earth’s surface, including ice movement, land subsidence, natural disasters, and forest biomass, with unprecedented accuracy under all weather conditions, day or night. The satellite’s data will be made freely available to scientists and governments around the world, usually within 24 to 48 hours, and even faster during emergencies. Following a 90-day calibration and commissioning phase, NISAR will begin full scientific operations, delivering vital data to support climate resilience, disaster preparedness, and sustainable development. This $1.5 billion collaboration is seen as one of the most advanced and significant contributions to global environmental monitoring to date.
