A 4.6 magnitude earthquake shook the area around Italy’s Campi Flegrei supervolcano on Monday, marking the strongest tremor in the densely populated region near Naples in 40 years. The quake caused minor damage and disrupted trains but has raised concerns as seismic activity in the area intensifies. The Italian government has already prepared a mass evacuation plan for the 360,000 residents living near the caldera. Earlier this month, a smaller tremor damaged parts of the ancient Pompeii site.

Meanwhile, large parts of Europe are sweltering under record heatwaves. Seville is also enduring scorching conditions, with 34°C recorded this morning, made worse by an overnight power failure that has severely affected train services between Madrid and Andalucía. Travel between Paris and Milan remains suspended for several days following violent storms in southeastern France.

In response to the heat, Italian regions such as Lazio and Lombardy have introduced measures to protect outdoor workers, while cities like Genoa have expanded free travel for seniors to help them avoid peak temperatures. Bologna has reported a surge in emergency calls.
