Starting the second phase of stray dog control in Zarqa
The Governor of Zarqa, Hassan Al-Jubour, announced the launch of the second phase to eliminate the stray dog phenomenon in the governorate. Al-Jubour stated that the first phase of the plan achieved tangible successes, including reducing dog attacks to zero in some areas and by 50% in other areas. He added that the initial step involved relocating stray dogs from residential areas to locations outside the city and providing them with food, utilizing leftover meals from restaurants and food factories collected in those areas. He emphasized that this process provides a suitable environment for the dogs to stay outside residential areas.
Al-Jubour further explained that the second phase of the plan involves allocating a 20-dunam piece of land for gathering the dogs, rehabilitating them, and vaccinating them, with the long-term goal of utilizing them for social purposes such as guarding facilities and rehabilitating them more effectively. He highlighted that Zarqa serves as an exemplary model in eliminating the stray dog phenomenon.
Ahmad Hussein Al-Tamimi, the president of the Care for Animals and Environment Society, stated that the first phase included distributing over 300,000 kilograms of leftover food from restaurants and food factories. Al-Tamimi mentioned that the society adopted a plan to gradually withdraw the dogs by 50 meters in each daily feeding operation, covering all areas of Zarqa. He confirmed that the estimated number of stray dogs in Zarqa reaches a maximum of approximately 700 dogs, and the society has built a database to determine the appropriate methods of dealing with these animals.
