The governor of Zarqa has announced the commencement of the second phase of stray dog control.
Governor Hassan Al-Jubour has announced the launch of the second phase to combat the issue of stray dogs in Zarqa. During a meeting attended by Dr. Hayel Ayyash, the deputy, the mayor of Zarqa, Engineer Imad Al-Momani, and the mayor of Ruseifa, Shadi Al-Zaynati, as well as several executive directors of government agencies in the governorate, Al-Jubour stated that the first phase of the plan achieved significant successes, including reducing dog attacks to zero in some areas and by 50% in others.
Al-Jubour explained that the initial step involved relocating stray dogs from residential areas to locations outside the city and providing them with food, utilizing leftover meals from restaurants and food factories collected in those areas. He emphasized that this process creates a suitable environment for the dogs to remain outside residential areas.
The second phase of the plan includes allocating a 20-dunam piece of land for gathering the dogs, rehabilitating them, and vaccinating them, with the long-term goal of utilizing them for social purposes such as guarding facilities and rehabilitating them more effectively.
Al-Jubour highlighted that Zarqa serves as an exemplary model in eliminating the stray dog phenomenon. On the other hand, Ahmad Hussein Al-Tamimi, the president of the Care for Animals and Environment Society, stated that the first phase included distributing over 300,000 kilograms of leftover food from restaurants and food factories.
Al-Tamimi mentioned that the society has adopted a plan to gradually withdraw the dogs by 50 meters in each daily feeding operation, covering all areas of Zarqa. He confirmed that the estimated maximum number of stray dogs in Zarqa is approximately 700, and the society has built a database to determine appropriate methods of dealing with these animals.
